Josefov and Staré Město are two of the districts with the densest optical infrastructure in Prague. The historic building stock, high concentration of businesses and residential buildings, and the presence of key data routes have meant that optical fibre reaches areas where it would not be economically viable in other parts of Prague. Nevertheless, there are still buildings and streets where the situation is less favourable, which is why it pays to know the details before signing a contract.
The Prague 1 centre was one of the first areas where backbone optical networks began to be built, initially for commercial buildings and banks, gradually also for residential blocks. Josefov, as a historically compact district with high building density, benefits from short distances between distribution points and end-user buildings.
Our own optical network in this area has been gradually built up since 2007. Today it covers a substantial part of Josefov and the adjacent streets of Staré Město. Thanks to short routes from distribution nodes to buildings, we achieve low latency (under 5 ms) and high reliability, outages caused by physical damage or signal attenuation are minimal.
On our optical network in Prague 1, we offer symmetrical tariffs, download and upload speeds are always identical. Available speeds range from 100 Mb/s for standard households up to 10 Gbit/s for demanding business clients or apartment buildings with a collective connection.
100 Mb/s symmetric - Suitable for households of up to 4-5 people, regular 4K streaming, home office and video conferencing. The 100 Mb/s upload speed handles cloud backups or file sharing without waiting.
300 Mb/s symmetric - for larger households, creative professionals working with large files or small offices up to 10 people. Parallel video conferencing, cloud backups and streaming without any mutual interference.
500 Mb/s symmetric - Standard business tariff for offices with 10-30 users, supporting simultaneous use of cloud applications, VPN, IP telephony and video conferencing.
1 000 Mb/s (1 Gb/s) symmetrically - for larger companies, organisations with high upload demands (video production, server backups, running own infrastructure) or apartment buildings with a collective connection.
2 000 Mb/s (2 Gb/s) symmetrically - premium tariff for data operations, server farms or large office complexes. On our network in Prague 1 this is technically available thanks to modern GPON/XGS-PON infrastructure.
The building connection is only part of the equation. The actual speed on your device depends on other factors:
Internal building distribution. Older residential buildings in Josefov and Staré Město have varying quality of internal wiring. If the optical fibre runs only to the ground floor and continues via outdated copper, speed may be limited. During installation we always verify the condition of the internal wiring and recommend any necessary adjustments.
Quality and placement of the router. Wi-Fi signals propagate poorly through the stone walls of historic buildings. A router placed in the optimal location within an apartment or office, or supplemented with network switches and access points, can significantly increase the actual experienced speed.
Devices and their network cards. A gigabit connection is pointless if your workstation or NAS has only a 100Mb/s network card. Modern laptops usually have Wi-Fi 6 or gigabit Ethernet, older hardware may be the limiting factor.
Simultaneous use of the connection line. If 20 employees in the office simultaneously download large files, stream 4K video and make VoIP calls, the total bandwidth requirement increases. Correct tariff sizing prevents mutual blocking.
The comparison between the situation in central Prague and the outer districts is revealing. In Prague 6, 9 or 14 there are areas where fibre optics still does not reach apartment buildings, and only cable or DSL connections are available. In central Prague the situation is the opposite, cable and DSL connections have given way to fibre optics as the primary technology.
The result is that residents and businesses in Josefov and Staré Město have access to significantly better infrastructure than the Prague average, at comparable or lower prices, because the dense network reduces the cost of bringing fibre to individual buildings.
Residential buildings and owners' associations in Josefov and Staré Město can arrange a single connection for the entire property. A bulk connection offers economies of scale: the price per flat or office is lower than if each tenant signed an individual contract, and provides a single point of contact for technical matters.
The building's owners' association or property manager signs one contract; the optical fibre runs to the technical room and is distributed from there to each residential or office unit. Individual residents then pay directly or via the building manager.
More information on group connections is available in the article Internet for the building's owners' association and residential buildingsIf you want to know which speeds are available at your address, check this on our homepage or contact us at +420 775 654 499.
If you want to find out how your current internet actually performs, and compare it with what fibre could offer: the simplest way is to measure it using one of the available tools. We recommend running the test at different times: morning, afternoon, and during the evening peak. Cable and DSL connections typically show significant fluctuations between morning and evening peaks. Fibre on a dedicated port does not exhibit these fluctuations.
Speed test results provide useful information for discussions with your ISP. They show whether your current connection meets its promises or if it is time to switch. Contact us at internet@pvip.cz and we will be happy to help you assess the situation.
We provide fast and stable internet, fair prices and reliable communication. You can sleep soundly.
