Optical Internet in Prague 1: A guide for households and businesses

If you are looking for internet in Prague 1, you have probably come across terms such as fibre, cable or DSL. The differences between them are not just technical, in practice they determine whether your video call drops during a meeting or whether your cloud backup takes five minutes instead of two hours.

Optics, cable or DSL: what is the difference?

DSL (xDSL) uses existing copper telephone lines. Speed decreases with distance from the PBX, and in older buildings the actual speed is often a fraction of the advertised value. Download is usually higher than upload: an asymmetry that is increasingly problematic today.

Cable internet (COAX) operates over the television coaxial cable. It is faster than DSL, but bandwidth is shared with neighbours in the vicinity. During peak times, mornings and afternoons, speed may fluctuate significantly. Upload is again considerably weaker than download.

Optical fibre transmits data as light impulses. Distance from the PBX is practically irrelevant, bandwidth sharing with other users is minimal and upload speed equals download speed. We call this symmetrical connection, and for business use and demanding households it is a decisive advantage.

Why do Prague 1 and Josefov have an advantage?

Josefov and the wider centre of Prague 1 are among the areas with one of the densest optical networks in the Czech Republic. The reason is both historical and practical: a high concentration of businesses, hotels, office buildings and flats in a compact area required the construction of robust infrastructure. As a result, optical fibre now reaches residential buildings where this would not have been economically feasible ten years ago.

Our own optical network covers a significant part of Prague 1. This means shorter routes, fewer active elements on the path to you, and thus lower latency and higher reliability.

What speeds are actually available?

On our network we offer symmetrical tariffs from 100 Mb/s to 2 000 Mb/s. For a typical household with several devices and 4K streaming, 100-300 Mb/s is sufficient. A business using remote access, cloud applications and video conferencing will benefit from 500 Mb/s or more, especially on upload.

How is fibre optic installation carried out?

If the optical fibre has not yet been brought to the building, the first step is to run the backbone fibre from the nearest distribution point. In most buildings in Josefov and the surrounding area, this fibre already exists or its installation takes hours rather than weeks. The actual installation in the flat or office includes an optical cabinet, a converter to a standard network port and connection of your router. Work on the plasterwork is usually zero.

From a technical standpoint, the entire process usually involves one technician visit lasting one to two hours.

What is the cost?

Prices for optical internet in Prague 1 are now comparable to cable and DSL alternatives, and for business tariffs the differences are often negligible. Yet you gain significantly higher reliability, symmetry and guaranteed bandwidth without evening outages.

For whom is fibre in Prague 1 the best choice?

Practically for everyone. Households appreciate reliable operation without outages and sufficient speed for the whole family. Companies benefit from symmetry, file uploads, backups, remote access and VPN work as smoothly as downloads. Apartment buildings and the building's owners' association can cover the entire property with a single contract with one operator.
