If you are looking for internet optics Prague and don't know where to start, you are in the right place. Optical connection is no longer a premium service only for large companies, in the centre of Prague, especially in Josefov and Staré Město, optical fibre is available to hundreds of buildings and prices are comparable with cable alternatives. In this guide we explain how optical works, why it is better than DSL or mobile internet and what exactly you get when connecting via our network.
Classic data transmission over copper wire operates on the principle of an electrical signal. Optical fibre works differently, data are transmitted as light impulses, specifically infrared radiation. A glass or plastic fibre with a diameter comparable to a human hair can transmit vast amounts of data over long distances without significant attenuation.
Key feature: optical signal does not degrade with distance as dramatically as electrical signal. While with a DSL connection the speed difference between an apartment 200 metres from the PBX and one 2 kilometres from the PBX can be multiple-fold, with fibre optics this dependency practically does not exist. You receive equally fast internet regardless of your exact location in Prague.
Modern optical networks in residential areas most commonly use the PON architecture, Passive Optical Network, or passive optical network in Czech. The term "passive" indicates that the splitting elements in the network (splitters) do not require power. The optical signal is mechanically divided into multiple fibres without active electronics.
Practical consequence: passive networks are more reliable. Fewer active elements mean fewer potential faults. For users in central Prague, this results in higher connection availability and fewer outages caused by network infrastructure failure. Our optical network in Josefov and the surrounding area is built on this principle.
DSL connections utilise existing copper telephone lines. At the height of their popularity, in the late 1990s and the first decade of this century. They were a smart way to rapidly cover large areas without new infrastructure. However, copper has physical limits that today have become an insurmountable obstacle.
First, speed: with ADSL, download is limited to tens of Mb/s, while upload is typically four to eight times slower. With the more modern VDSL, hundreds of Mb/s can be achieved, but only over very short distances, and upload remains significantly lower. Second, reliability: older copper distribution lines in Prague's historic buildings are susceptible to interference, moisture and physical damage. Third, symmetry: DSL is inherently asymmetric because line capacity is deliberately allocated more to download.
Optics has no such limitations. Symmetry is an inherent property of fibre, not a marketing decision.
Mobile internet has undergone dramatic development in recent years. 5G networks in the centre of Prague offer downloads exceeding 500 Mb/s under ideal conditions. So why choose fibre optics anyway?
The key word is stability. Mobile connections are shared with dozens or hundreds of users in a given cell. During peak times, events, or in densely built-up areas, speed fluctuates. For video conferencing or access to a corporate VPN, you need a stable, predictable connection: not average speed under ideal conditions.
Upload matters too: even the best 5G tariffs offer significantly lower upload speeds than download. For companies backing up data or running their own servers, this represents a critical limitation. Fibre on our network provides symmetrical tariffs from 100 to 2 000 Mb/s, identical speed in both directions, guaranteed by contract.
And finally latency: optical fibre achieves latencies below 5 ms. Mobile networks typically range from 20 to 60 ms, and even higher under congestion. For the gaming community, stock traders or industrial applications requiring low latency, this difference is critical.
The connection process depends on whether optical fibre already reaches your building. In Josefov and adjacent parts of Prague 1 our network is deployed, in many buildings the fibre is already present or its installation takes days, not weeks.
If the fibre does not reach the building, we start by bringing in the backbone cable from the nearest distribution point. In Prague's historic centre our network is dense, so distances are usually short. The installation in an apartment or office includes an optical converter (ONT - Optical Network Terminal), a standard network port and connection of your router. Work on the plasterwork is minimal or non-existent in most cases.
The entire process from order to activation usually takes 5-10 working days. The technical visit to your home or office typically lasts one to two hours.
An optical connection is not just about speed. It brings a set of features that together create a qualitatively different experience in managing the connection:
Guaranteed bandwidth. Unlike cable operators where you share bandwidth with neighbours, we offer dedicated bandwidth. You get exactly what is stated in the contract, even during peak times, at weekends, and during football broadcasts.
SLA and guaranteed availability. Business tariffs come with a 99,9 % availability guarantee and a defined response time for outages. You will not find such commitments from consumer operators.
Static IP address. Without surcharge or for a minimal fee. For companies operating their own servers, remote access or IP-based security, a static IP is a basic requirement.
Local support. Our technical centre is in Josefov, Břehová 40/1. If a problem arises, the technician will arrive from just a few blocks away: not from a call centre in another city.
Our network covers Josefov, Staré Město, parts of Nové Město and adjacent areas. You can check exact availability for your address at our homepage or contact us directly. Verification takes a few minutes and is not binding.
